1 day Writing Class and Workshop
Learning about essays on architecture
12 August 2017

The participants of this workshop will get the fundamental and practical knowledge of essays on architecture. Each participant is suggested to get the ability to write an essay at the end of workshop. The tutor will explain the BEAM (Background-Exhibit-Argument-Method) research strategy developed by Joseph Bizup. Second, the approaches of some critics taken from the book written by Alexandra Lange entitled writing about architecture.

Lecture: 10.00 am – 12.00 pm
Workshop: 13.00 am – 18.00 pm

The workshop will be divided into two sessions. In the first session, there is a presentation about introduction to essays on architecture followed by topic selection and research methods. The following second session will cover writing structure. The day is closed by discussion and sharing session.

The tuition fee is IDR 200.000,-. You will get design kit and other facilities for the course purpose including seminar book.

About The Tutor

Robin Hartanto Honggare is a writer and curator, and, presently, a PhD student at Columbia GSAPP. His current research focuses on architecture, nationalism, and internationalism in Southeast Asia.

He curated the Indonesia Pavilion at the 14th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice (2014); “A Conservation Story,” an exhibition of Five awardees of UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation in Indonesia (2014); and the Universitas Pelita Harapan Architecture Triennial “Waktu Adalah Ruang” in Kota Tua, Jakarta (2015). He edited, among other books, Studio Talk: Home (2012), Publik dan Reklame di Ruang Kota Jakarta (2013), and Craftsmanship: Material Consciousness (2014). His writings have been published widely in both print and electronic mediums, including in the Avery Review, Jakarta Post, Historia, Griya Asri, and Remotivi. His master’s thesis research was awarded a Buell Center Fellowship (2016) and CCCP Thesis Award (2017). His essay Uncornering Speakers: On Political Speech in Singapore received the GSAPP Writing Prize.

Robin previously worked as a reseach assistant at the Office of Publications of Columbia GSAPP and at the Temple Hoyne Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture; as a junior architect at Avianti Armand Studio; and as a content writer at Yahoo! Indonesia. He has taught at Universitas Pelita Harapan and Universitas Indonesia.
