Book Discussion #11 – Tegang Bentang

We will gather again for Book Discussion session. Christopher Alexander, we will continue to discussing the book’s prologue about ongoing debate within history of Indonesia Modern Architecture.

Seratus Tahun Perspektif Arsitektural di Indonesia.

Tegang Bentang is a collection of essay that examine architectural event and figures in indonesia from the last century, which covers from pre to post-colonial era.

Written by several author, the book composed chronologically, focusing on significant architects in history and important issues that surround them. Consisted of 4 thematic chapter, it is divided according to topics: early Dutch and Indonesian architects, a search for locality in Indonesia architecture, and a retrospection of modernism’s emergence, followed by the post-independence political movement that has remarkable influence in architecture and urban planning of Indonesia.

Amir Sidharta will be discussing the book’s prologue about ongoing debate within history of Indonesia Modern Architecture.

About the speaker
Amir Sidharta is one of contributor for discussed book. He is a curator of University of Pelita Harapan Museum and lecturer on architecture program in the same institute. On 2005 he established Sidharta Auctioneer. His writings and photography works has been featured in numerous magazine and indonesian newspaper, also published journal within region likewise abroad. He has finished book titled 25 Tropical Houses in Indonesia and S. Sudjojono: Visible Soul.
