Lecture Series 04 – On Grammatology

In 1976, Derrida published three ground breaking works, published in French, which are Of Grammatology, Speech and Phenomena, and Writing and Difference. His writings is about challenging the process of translation between a original idea (and its origin) and the execution of that ideas. He confirmed that translation is a work of mourning, more of a task than a given. At the same time, translation “guarantees the survival of the body of the original”. He believed in the original idea itself that there is already ruin in the process of translation, there are layers of existing which he called it “the trace”.

Constructing grammar is a way to understand language as a sign system. In Architecture, there always been processes of translation of ideas into fruition, creating ruins in the original ideas while believing that the process itself is a way to define another grammar of making architecture. Derrida believes that the ruin is in the work, and the process to trace it, is a process of tracing a life itself, a book, and a thought.

Omah library, gladly discusses the concept of Architecture on grammatology by discussing 4 lectures in the process of understanding synthesis of ideas and making grammars in architecture :

1. On grammatology : It will discuss about the concept of finding deconstruction in architecture based on Jacques Derrida of Grammatology in the process of translation and finding the original.

2. Elements of semiology : The lecture will discuss about taxonomy from language and speech, signified and signifier, syntagm and system, and denotation and connotation. The taxonomy of these sciences, if it were well known, would undoubtedly provide a great deal of information on what might be called the field of intellectual imagination.

3. Simulacra and simulation : The lecture is about the reality and the image, there are 3 orders of simulacra , the first one is clean counterfeit of the real, the second is mass production of a representation, which threatening to replace its predecessor (the reality itself), but believe that hidden facts was there to pursue, and the third, there is no distinction between reality and its representation. There is only the simulacrum which precedes and determines the real. .

4. Mythologies, is discussion where the ideas are still motivated by concepts which they represent thile not yet, by a long way, covering the sum of its possibility. Whereas it aims at an ultrasignification, at the amplification of the ideas, tries to transform the sign back into meaning of architecture.

Look forward to learn from this topic and therefore, we invited you to join the discussion. See you in Omah Library on 20th May 2017
