Learning From The Master #20 – Y. B. Mangunwijaya

Hi Restless Spirits!

We will be holding another session of Learning from The Master: Yusuf Bilyarta Mangunwijaya.

Yusuf Bilyarta Mangunwijaya (1929-1999) is an architectural figure and priest, well known by the name of Romo Mangun. He has showed interest on engineering and natural science since his childhood. He has graduated from Sekolah Teknik Jetis in Yogyakarta and continued his theological education at Sekolah Seminari Tinggi St. Paulus in Yogyakarta. He had developed a relationship with Mrg. Soegijapranata, a Bishop of Semarang and led Romo Mangun in learning Architecture at ITB. He also aked to continued his education in Aachen, Germany.

After his return from Germany, he had worked on some social and religious activies. His contemplation on the ability of community in architecture led Romo Mangun to involve the active participation of community and users since the concept and to the final result. With its roots on the local wisdom, Romo Mangun urged to see the issues from two different point of views: from the outside, cultural context, economy and politic. From the inside, citizens and users in community based activities. In his Architecture process, Romo Mangun has two point of contexts that are being considered, first “lingkungan masalah guna” and “lingkungan masalah citra”. “Guna” refers to uses and “citra” refers to cognition.
