Never Ending Discussion in Architecture

In OMAH we have to position like ‘Ponokawan’. In Javanese wayang, other than the story of the heroes, there are a servant called ‘Ponokawan’, ‘Pono’ means light, ‘kawan’ means friend. So, Ponokawan means friend who guided to the light paths. They act silly and they have odd personality. Hero represents a body and mind, and Ponokawan represents the soul. [1]

There are four of Ponokawan. Semar is a true teacher character and moderator of ponokawan. Gareng is a symbol of sadness and pain that always skeptical. Petruk is an easy going character that full of humor. Bagong is a shadow of Semar which is innocent and his phrase is naive all of the time. The spectators constantly will wait scene of Ponokawan. Although their conversation often out of topics and context, for example: strange vocabulary, and words from another era which out of context (handphone, television, car or plane). [2]

If ponokawan talk about architecture, it will be like this:

Semar : (Sit gazing Zaha Hadid’s Olympic Stadium design from his tablet)

Bagong : This Olympic Stadium like a giant white elephant, isn’t it? Look this is the ivory and this is the big ears.

Gareng : Is that can be functional building? I think that is not fit with Tokyo context. It’s all about form by architects.

Bagong : I think it’s just about a gimmick. It was proved by public so it wasn’t built. They don’t like it.

Gareng : If Zaha Hadid’s design was not built, then who could design Tokyo Olympic Stadium?

Bagong : If I think it again. This stadium more like a Bicycle helmet. Kekeke…

Petruk : What are you talking about? It’s so noisy. Let’s talk about the bicycle, I have just seen new London Taxi bicycle. That’s very cool!

Semar : Dear my friend, please don’t suspend your judgement. Architecture is an intercourse of ‘Guna ‘ means function and ‘Citra’ means image. Building was an inanimate object, but it does not mean unspiritual. The building is the image of society. Nature and architectural culture should unite with the universe [3]
