Journey to the East : Reflection of Indonesian Architecture

OMAH, Konteks, and UPH Architecture gladly created architecture short course for understanding our roots, the need of human being, and futher ahead, the need of the nature in the Indonesia, understanding our current practice. East Architecture or Indonesia is often defined by sensitive approach to spirituality, or sensitive to the culture and climate, or the inter-relationship between body, spiritual and mind in attitude of design. The course is carefully set by consideration on how we learn the forming of education of an architect, understanding our traditional wisdom, reflecting on our current contemporary issues, innovating through sustainable architecture, and the last mastering the architecture and the technology and science of material in form making.

It’s about a way to fully understand Architecture in Indonesia and covering several key points :

Education on Indonesian Architecture, the reality and expectation in current academic practice. This issue is important, is’t about building one profession, from the basic on how one’s designer should be taught in terms of design skills, theory understanding, and design attitude. The lecture is about the explanation about to answer the issues of what is the current paradigm in Indonesian architecture education to create relationship of academic side to design practice. This session will intrigues the question of what is indonesian architecture education perspective should be ? how to contribute to the development of design skill to solve the problem of society ? Understanding Traditional Indonesian Architecture, answering Modernism Challenge. It’s an attempt to position traditional indonesian architecture in the current challenge to show the exemplary way of dealing with human being, with nature, and tools to answer the challenge while we have such amount of vocabulary the meeting of 2 continents, un imagined cultures and way of doing things in tropical climate. It means to investigate our life, our culture in our roots without glorifying too much on its label, traditional architecture building science an technology. [Setia Sopandi]

Reflecting on Indonesian Contemporary architecture. The reflection of our contemporary practice in 2015 refers to the discussion of function and aesthetics the way the Bauhaus did, the juxtaposition between economics and ethics, time and space or even further to place and event. A lot of group of enthusiastic, Indonesian architects formed a forum, got matured, did exhibitions, formed discussions, was covered by media such as AMI, Jong Arsitek, Majalah Ruang, Konteks, Ruang 17. Is it about only creating legacy as reaction to the past ? Is it about exposure of the media ? are we actually innovating or we are only echoing something simmilar from time to time ? and the importance is How to regenerate from to emerge new ideas which solve the problem of the society ?[Avianti Armand]

Sustainable Architecture in Indonesia – Ethical Challenge. It’s about the sharing of how sustainable building and its landscape, creating ecosystem might be a solution to answer world’s crisis in energy, water, and food. It’s about the discussion on importance of the integration of passive and active building system in design, to edit the value of the building, the project, and its exposure to the society or human or even to the world or nature itself as a new way to look at ethics in profession. Architecture its Materiality in Indonesia – explorations of architecture expression. Sometimes the innovation of the architecture is defined by the its expression of materiality, or even the finger print of its material. Vitruvius tried to explain by accentuating on durability or Romo Mangunwijaya tried to explain the importance to understand material through Wastuwudya (Ilmu Bangunan). It’s about to explain that architecture is not about idea, but it’s also form and an atmosphere of feel of space. [Adi Purnomo]
